AVENGERS - AGE OF ULTRON
As any fan of Marvel comics, I was beyond believe when I was hired to be part of this film. I was even more thrilled to be a part of the team that would bring The Vision to the the big screen for the first time.
I was, however, taken a back when we realized that the task at hand was not to just enhance a prosthetic, but to replace most of it from the neck up while maintaining the performance of Paul Bettany. This took some of the most talented tracking artist and animators I have ever worked with as well as the most amazing compositors who took our work and masterfully blended it to the plate.
It all started with a detailed model matching Marvel's specifications. Every groove and proportion was painstakingly derived at. We then created a set of shaders that recreated other worldly materials and after many variations the A.I. being had a look and feel. The next step was to track every shot with surgical precision. Every pixel had to match at every single frame on every single move. No slipping could even be hinted at. Just when we thought the worst was behind us, the animation process kicked in. Every move had to me matched moved with the same surgical precision the tracking process went through. Hundreds of hours went into making this perfect synthesis of movements.
Finally, the set lighting had to be recreated on every single of the 90+ shots to be a perfect match to the plate so that the compositors could blend CG and practical performance.
The final result was an other worthy character which defined the practical & CG, and that would challenge any notions your brain might have had about the "uncanny valley'.
